From the Stone Age of about 2.5 million to 10 thousand years before to the present Information Age, technology has been influencing and changing humans’ life. The evolution of technology is usually coupled with transformation of society as well as the development process of humankind. Every new invention may indicate tremendous change in the way humans live and produce, despite the fact that such change is endowed with two-sided nature, which is inevitable. This week, Alex guided participants of the English Corner to explore in depth the technology, to think about technology itself and the way it influences humans’ life.
科技触手可及，与生活息息相关。人们佩戴的眼镜，携带的智能手机，照明的电灯，书写用的纸笔，乘坐的电梯等等，科技产物不胜枚举。对科技的认知与理解因人而异。基于生活经验及背景的不同，对于科技如何改变生活及社会这个话题，参与者结合自身实际，发表不同见解。通过手机，人们可以随时随地与天涯之隔的家人及友人联络，传递心声、互诉衷肠。通讯科技日新月异，从早期刻画于金字塔内壁的象形图到字母表的创生，从活字印刷机到将印刷效率提高至新高度的打印机，从微处理器到笔记本电脑再到平板电脑，每一步通讯领域的跨越都大大提高了通讯效率。在医学领域发展起来并日趋成熟的微创手术，使手术创口减小，减轻术后疼痛，缩短康复时间，从而将患者手术的痛苦降至最低。支付方式多样化，现金支付减少。银行卡、支付宝及微信支付方式渐趋流行，人们无需携带钱包便可购物，方便快捷。3D打印技术能够自动、快速且精确地将三维设计转化为实物模型，甚至直接制造零件或模具，从而有效缩短产品研发周期。
Technology is within reach of everyone and everywhere, closely bound up with life. To name just a few, technological products encompass glasses people wear, smart phone carried, electric lamp for illumination, paper & pen for writing, elevator taken, etc. Cognition and understanding towards technology vary. Based on different life experience and backgrounds, and in combination with individual actual situations, participants voiced their diverse perspectives with regard to the topic of “how has technology changed our life & society”. Via mobile phone, people are able to contact with family and friends on the other side of the world whenever and wherever, conveying their feelings & emotions and telling about their happiness & sorrows. Changing with each passing day, from the pictogram engraved on the inner wall of pyramids in early times to the creation of alphabet, from the printing press to the typewriter which gives impetus to printing efficiency and makes it reach a new height, from microprocessor to personal computer & tablet, every stride of which has enhanced communication efficiency to a large extent. Developing from the medical field and becoming increasingly mature, the minimally invasive surgery diminishes the operation wound, alleviates the post-operation pain and shortens the time for recovery, thereby minimizing the operation sufferings of patients. Diversification of payment modes reduces the adoption of cash payment. By virtue of bank card, Alipay and WeChat Pay, the three increasingly popular modes, people need no more to take wallet for purchase, which is convenient and quick enough. The 3-dimentional printing technology can transform the 3-dimentional design into physical model in an automatic, rapid and accurate manner, or even manufacture components and moulds, thus significantly cutting down the R&D period of products.

Moreover, apps with wide range of types and powerful functions win affections of phone users. Alex led participants to design apps in the unit of group by giving full rein to imagination and creativity, of which the details shall comprise its name, logo, functions, reasons for design and target audiences. Through a series of communication and discussion, participants figured out four apps which boast both fashionable characteristics and pragmatic functions covering respectively the fields of physical workout, medical care, tourism and diet, among which the “Foodie Map” stirred full-house resonance for its distinctive design. With the self-supporting function of GPS, aimed to provide the most authoritative and reliable food guidance for tourists on the journey who find it hard to locate the regional specialties, this app enlists the most authentic restaurants where the most original taste and flavor are retained, together with menus, prices and comments of customers, piloting tourists to gobble up delicacies.
总体而言，科技为人类生活带来无限便利，创造无限可能。在未来，相信科技同样会大有作为，令人期许。然而核武器等科技的负面应用同样赋予它破坏性。科技的价值取决于人类如何对待与利用科技。造福人类而非招致灾祸，科技价值方能实现，趋于永恒。
In brief, technology brings about limitless convenience to humans’ life and creates infinite possibilities. It is commonly believed that technology will also play an important role in the future, nevertheless, the negative technological application, such as nuclear weapons, also makes it destructive. The value of technology hinges upon the ways we treat and utilize it. Only by benefiting humans instead of causing catastrophe can we realize the value of technology, and have it last eternally.
